How To: Choose a Visualization Mode

Problem: You need to select the right visualization mode for your waveform's visual style.

Solution: Choose a mode based on your aesthetic goals and the type of audio content you're visualizing.

Mode selection:

  • bars — Classic vertical bars, general-purpose visualization
  • roundBars — Rounded bars with softer appearance
  • bricks — Stacked rectangular blocks, retro aesthetic
  • line — Sharp line graph, emphasizes frequency changes
  • curve — Smooth curved line, softer than line mode
  • pixel — Pixelated bars extending from center, retro aesthetic
  • wave — Filled waveform shape, classic audio visualization
  • spikes — Symmetrical spikes, dramatic visual impact

Decision criteria:

  • Use bars or roundBars for general-purpose music and speech.
  • Use bricks for retro or vintage aesthetic.
  • Use line or curve to emphasize frequency changes.
  • Use wave for classic audio player visualization.
  • Use spikes for energetic music or sound effects.

All 8 modes are demonstrated with live examples in the Waveform reference.
